World Suicide Prevention Day

 News Cover: We all know what suicide means, it is intentionally causing one's death. It is done by hanging, slitting of the wrists, shooting, drinking poison, jumping off a building, intentional drowning, etc. Suicide is death caused by injuring oneself with the intent to die. This is its Sign. You all know about this. There have been many celebrities suicided like Sushant Singh Rajput, actress Jiah Khan, Cafe Coffee Day founder VG Siddhartha died of suicide by jumping into a river and there have been many others. Many male and female youngsters have also resorted to suicide. There have been cases of suicide among the Deaf as well due to stress. 

WHO has reported that around 8,00,00 people die each year, due to suicide i.e. 1 death every 40 seconds. How shocking! According to the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), in India in 2019 an average of 381 deaths by suicide was recorded daily. The total fatalities by suicide were 1,39,123 and an increase of 3.4 per cent i.e 4,730 more were observed in 2019 as compared to 2018. It also said that for every 100 suicide deaths, 70% were male and 30% were females. Today 10 September 2021 is an important day as it is World Suicide Prevention Day. The objective of the day is to create awareness & prevent suicides by spreading positivity. This is being celebrated on 10 September since 2003. 

Since 2003, World Suicide Prevention Day has been organized by the IASP in collaboration with the WHO and the WFMH. They have been working towards creating awareness about suicide prevention. The same is being done today on 10 September 2021. You all may wonder what is the reason for suicides. It can be stress for example financial distress, unemployment, people laid off during the pandemic have been committing suicides, breakups are causing suicides and there are many other reasons for it. Before taking such drastic steps people tend to suffer from depression & stress which is repressed and ignored. 

Overwhelmed by this people start to get suicidal tendencies. When this happens to stop yourself and share your feelings with someone. Maybe your best friend, a mentor, a family member or you can even consult a doctor or psychologist. Sharing your feelings will surely save you from taking that drastic step. Many people suffer from this. If you are depressed and have suicidal tendencies doing this will help you. Let me tell you how. If a person has mental health issues along with suicidal tendencies, sometimes they fear sharing their feelings dreading judgement and stigma. Shoving your feelings aside is not a good idea. Doing this will endanger your life. Share your feelings with someone who will understand you, a family member, a mentor or a doctor. Their guidance will relieve your troubles. 

People tend to ignore feelings of worthlessness and a lot of negativity. Doing this can build up and cause a huge problem. Do not do this. Whenever you are unhappy share your feelings with someone. This is very important. If you have no one, visit a doctor who can help you with your feelings. Depression does not mean you are weak. Depression is a mental illness. This is not easy. It is not easy to understand either. Merely telling a person to be positive is not enough and can instead cause more trouble. To resolve this a depressed person needs to see a doctor or psychologist. These are the various preventive measures you can try. If you notice any behavioural change in your loved ones, you should talk to them instead of ignoring them. Listen to their feelings. 

Do not diminish their feelings. Just don't keep telling them to be positive. Always telling a person to be positive when they share their feelings can make them push them down. This can cause suicidal tendencies. Do not do this. Listen to them. Try to explain them. If all fails take them to a doctor. There are many ways to help such people. Suicide is never an option. Please remember this!
