The News Cover: Assam is holding a three-phase Assembly election that began on March 27, 2021. The 2nd Phase of elections was held on 1st April. The ruling BJP is hoping for re-election and is facing a tough challenge from Congress. Polling booths are where people of a particular locality go to place their votes. On 1st April, in the Dima Hasao District of Assam,

90 people had registered to vote on 1st April. These individuals had registered and were given Voter's ID. 90 names were on the electoral roll. Once votes were cast, it was found that 171 votes had been cast on the EVM machine. There was a major discrepancy.

Nobody knew where the extra votes came from as only 90 people had registered to vote. On 2nd April Five Assam polling personnel had been suspended for dereliction of duty. This occurred on 2nd April but no one knew about it.

News spread only on 4th April. A district official said the village chief brought the villagers to the booth. The chief of the village refused to accept the official voters’ list and the villagers cast their votes according to the one the chief was armed with.

The district officials did not provide clarity on the incident and did not say whether there was any security personnel present at the polling station. The Election Commission has announced reelection but the dates have not been announced yet.
